Input Observers Design: Linear\, Nonlinear and Infinite-dimensional System
sAbstract: Unknown Input Observers are a powerful tool for robust estimati
on and fault-diagnosis in control systems. Their key feature is that\, bas
ed on some algebraic/differential conditions\, the corresponding estimatio
n error can be made decoupled from unknown inputs driving the system dynam
ics. This talk will provide an overview on some results pertaining the des
ign of Unknown Input Observers in several interesting and challenging setu
ps: linear systems with redundant inputs and application to fault-tolerant
control allocation\, fully nonlinear systems\, hybrid systems with state-
driven jumps and systems governed by partial differential equations. Examp
les of applications arising from the field of robotic systems will be disc
ussed and used to better illustrate the features of this special class of
state observers. Biosketch: Dr. Andrea Cristofaro received the M.Sc. in Ma
thematics from Sapienza University of Rome in 2005 and the PhD in Informat
ion Science and Complex Systems from University of Camerino (Italy) in 201
 0. After some years spent in France (INRIA Grenoble) and Norway (NTNU and
University of Oslo) holding different academic positions\, in 2019 he join
ed the Department of Computer\, Control and Management Engineering\, Sapie
nza University of Rome\, where he is currently an Assistant Professor (RTD
-B). Dr. Cristofaro is author of more than 100 scientific papers\, and he
serves as Associate Editor for Journal of Intelligent & Robotic Systems (S
pringer) and IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology (starting Jan
2023). He is also member of the IEEE CSS Conference Editorial Board and o
f the Board of Experts of the European Science Foundation. He is recipient
of a Marie-Curie fellowship\, and his main research interests include: fa
ult-tolerant control\, observers for linear and nonlinear systems\, multi-
agent and multi-robot systems\, control of distributed parameter systems.
