DESCRIPTION:As computing and communications devices become increasingly per
vasive in our modern life and culture\, the applications that they support
touch us in myriad ways. Games have become a central component of this co
nnected and online experience. They are core tools that create and enable
it. The uses of games and gamification have expanded beyond entertainment
and commerce to a range of applications that include education\, training
and healthcare. Prof. Elena Bertozzi’s group has worked with scientists\,
physicians and educators to develop games that promote STEM (science\, tec
hnology\, engineering and math) topics\, motivate specific behavior change
s\, and train healthcare providers. Recently the group has combined this w
ork with the use of gamification platforms to gather data\, monitor compli
ance and motivate gameplay. Bertozzi will demonstrate several of the group
’s games and discuss in detail a current project partnering with the Mexic
an National Institute of Health and researchers at Berkeley which aims to
reduce HIV infection among men who have sex with men in Mexico City. Follo
wing the talk\, there will be a discussion of using applied games to help
attract female students to computer science and game development.Elena Ber
